Things To Do…..Gillette Castle on the Connecticut River

by admin on March 24, 2012

Gillette Castle State Park is sited on a dramatic bluff overlooking a western view of the Connecticut River  The castle, once the home of actor, William Gillette, is now a wonderful spot for all to visit and enjoy the 180+ acres of woodland trails, picnic grove, gardens and most of all is the castle. There are a number of oddities in the castle personally designed by Mr Gillette, including very unusual doors, doorknobs and locks, and a system of hidden mirrors for surveillance of the public rooms from the master bedroom. Also designed by Gillette, the grounds used to have a railroad track with a working, narrow gauge steam engine’s that visitors could ride on, Much of the track was purchased by Lake Compounce amusement park and is in use today, to transport guests around the lake.

Located at 67 River Road in East Haddam, the castle is well worth a visit all by itself but may also be easily combined with the near by Goodspeed Opera House for a show or possibly the Essex Clipper Diner Train or how about a cruise on the river aboard the Becky Thatcher
